Director of Central Craft
  • Type of Appointment: 37.5 hours per week (negotiable), ongoing (subject to funding), six weeks annual leave.
  • Remuneration: $80,000 to $90,000 (commensurate with experience) plus 11% superannuation

about us

Central Craft is a not-for-profit membership-based organisation located in Alice Springs (Mpartnwe) that nurtures and promotes craft and design practice in Central Australia. We provide advocacy, support, promotional and professional development opportunities, access to well-equipped studios, a workshop program, a retail outlet, and a gallery space for established and emerging craftspeople living in Central Australia.

Central Craft strengthens community by providing opportunities for learning, creative expression, and social and professional networking. We support emerging and established craftspeople and artists working across many disciplines. Central Craft is incorporated under the NT Associations Act. It is governed by a volunteer Management Committee who are elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting.

Position Objectives

The Director works under the direction of the Central Craft Management Committee to ensure the sound management of the association and its programs and works towards meeting the association’s strategic and business objectives and any specific key performance criteria attached to funding agreements.

The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the centre, working closely with the association’s staff, members, and volunteers to deliver the annual program. This involves coordination of activities in the studio, retail outlet and gallery.

Areas of Responsibility

Financial Management:

  • Manage day-to-day administration and development of the association’s financial systems and procedures.
  • Manage financial strategic planning and budgets to deliver sustainable outcomes.
  • Stay abreast of funding opportunities and prepare relevant applications, reports and acquittals.
  • Seek out sponsorships and other financial support avenues.

Artistic Program:

  • Develop and facilitate the annual program including workshops, events and exhibitions that reflect Central Craft’s values, goals, and strategic objectives.
  • Identify and support skilled members of Central Craft to conduct workshops in their areas of expertise.

Promotion:

  • Coordinate the promotion and marketing of all Central Craft activities.
  • Maintain and develop the Central Craft website and social media platforms.

Administration:

  • Document and maintain records of activities for reporting.
  • Coordinate security, cleaning, and OH&S requirements within the centre, ensuring it is fit for purpose and risk is minimised.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations of the retail outlet, including the supervision of volunteers and coordination of the volunteer roster and database.
  • Supervise and support the Administration Assistant and other staff who may be appointed from time to time.
  • Other tasks as directed by the Management Committee.

Committee Liaison:

  • Attend monthly committee meetings and provide a written report of key deliverables.
  • Participate in committee discussions to keep the Committee informed of key issues in the organisation and any external issues that have a potential impact on the organisation.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A keen interest in art and design with experience in an Arts organisation that includes program and project management and event delivery as well as a record of successful collaborations with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, including successful grant applications and acquittals, and budgeting and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in promotion and marketing.
  • High level communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and age groups including the ability to communicate effectively with indigenous communities and their representatives.
  • High level organisational skills, with the ability to manage a complex set of priorities and deadlines.
