First Forms; Four months of making-Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre

In mid-2023, Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre revived its ceramics studio. With guidance from Central Crafts resident studio technician, Mark Cole, they launched a flexible, artist-led program teaching various ceramic skills. Artists created sculptural and functional pieces for personal use or sale, showing a talent for hand-building and ambitious projects.

First Forms is a series of initial forms and vessels created form this ceramic works by the Arlpwe Artists alongside a series of paintings.

It marks less than one year of working on the ceramics program and four months of making. It has been a great source of excitement at the art centre, bringing in new artists and offering a new avenue for storytelling, sharing culture and personal expression. Plans are being laid for new bodies of work, skill building workshops and utilising ceramics to engage the Ali Curung youth. We hope that this exhibition marks the beginning of a long and prosperous new venture for the community.
