Listening to the Land: 2025 Winter School Holidays Craft Program + Exhibition

This winter school holiday, Central Craft was buzzing with creativity as local artist Nina Annand led a thoughtful, hands-on workshop series for children and young people. Held during Irrernte Anthurre, the cold time of year on Arrernte Country, the program invited participants to reflect on seasonal change, cycles of life, and our deep interconnection with the land through storytelling and art-making.

Guided by Nina’s vibrant energy and care, the young artists explored the relationships between local animals, plants, and climate through textile costumes, paper sculpture, and collaborative play. Stories of the willy wagtail (Artityerrityerre) and visiting cuckoos became starting points for conversations about fairness, balance in nature, and what we can learn from these age-old cycles. Children discussed ideas big and small — from how to share a nest, to how we might support species struggling to adapt to climate change.

The resulting artworks were exhibited in the June Marriott Gallery from July 5–9 (extended to July 18th!), forming a heartfelt and playful mini-exhibition that celebrated both creativity and community. It was an inspiring reminder of how storytelling and making can help young people think deeply and feel connected to where they live.

A huge thank you to Nina for her thoughtful facilitation and creative spark — and to the Northern Territory Government for supporting this program through the Unleash Creativity Youth Activity Grant.

The artworks may come down, but the message lingers: listen to the land, learn from each other, and imagine a future of care and connection.
