Course Information

This beginner-friendly course offers a supportive introduction to the process of making functional pottery on the wheel and exploring basic glazing techniques. It is suitable for those who have always wanted to try wheel throwing, and people returning to pottery after a long break.

What the Course Covers

Over six sessions, participants will work towards developing confidence using the wheel and foundational wheel-throwing skills.

Sessions 1-4 focus areas:

  • Techniques for placing and centring clay on the wheel
  • Formation of basic cylindrical shapes, which may be developed into mugs, cups, bowls, vases, jugs, and lidded forms
  • Exploring different approaches to wheel work. There is no single correct way, so tutors will demonstrate a range of methods

Sessions 5-6 focus areas:

  • Exploring underglazing and glazing techniques
  • Decorating and glazing selected pieces
  • Preparing work for final firing, ready for collection after the course

Please note: while Mark Cole is the primary tutor for this course, alternate tutors may lead some sessions if required.
