Whether you're new to clay, returning after time away, or a hand-builder looking to expand your skills, this beginner-friendly course offers a supportive introduction to pottery on the wheel. Across six sessions, you’ll learn the fundamentals of making functional vessels and gain confidence through hands-on practice.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
Over 6 x Sunday afternoons, you’ll focus on building core wheel-throwing techniques:
- Centering clay on the wheel—essential for creating balanced forms
- Throwing basic cylinders, the starting point for mugs, cups, bowls, and more
- Exploring different approaches to wheelwork to discover what suits your style
- The final two Sunday sessions are dedicated to finishing your work:
- Learn underglazing and glazing techniques to add colour and character
- Refine and decorate your pieces
- Prepare your pots for their final kiln firing

MISSED SESSIONS
Its hard for most students to make all six programmed dates due to holidays, shift work, working on country, family commitments etc etc. Within reason, Mark will arrange small group catch up classes at no extra charge to ensure you get the most from your course. So don’t worry if you can’t make a day or two.
Your Host

Mark Cole, Central Craft’s Studio Technician and Ceramic Workshops Coordinator. Mark trained as a production thrower in the 1970s and has a deep love for slab-built and wheel-thrown forms, drawing inspiration from traditional East Asian ceramics.
An experienced teacher and mentor in Alice Springs, Mark has taught over 100 students in the past two years, guiding beginner, continuing, and advanced students in the art of wheel throwing. His approachable teaching style ensures a relaxed and supportive learning environment, making this workshop ideal for both first-time and experienced makers.
