Come learn how to use the technique of cobbling to make a bird from natural and man-made fibres. Cobbling is a kind of random stitching used to hold fibre together to create a form. Cobbling together fibres can really show the character of a material and the hand that made them. You will be provided with some information about basketry techniques, but the focus is enjoying the process of creative discovery. The birds will be exhibited in an art installation, that evolves during the Beanie Festival. Materials such as sisal rope, dyed corn husks, feathers, threads, and split flax will be provided.
I have been using basketry techniques in my art practice since I joined the Basketmakers of Victoria in 2005. With the assistance of generous members of this community organisation I have gained skills and knowledge that I enjoy sharing with others. The appeal of basketry is that it allows me to slow down and experience the satisfaction of creating something hand made. With this shorter workshop I will provide participants with a quicker method and working style that allows for the engaging fun of social play and creative discovery.
